Quirks. A rare happening and unique mystery in individuals that came into being around the age of four to six for those "lucky" enough to develop those superpowers. Some awe-inspiring and others relatively pathetic. Of the Quirks on record in Japan, only about 10% of the population had developed these powers. Many served as heroes or villains, kept monitored by the government and approved "handlers" with stronger Quirks, though all of them served the nation itself as part of their law and militia at home and abroad.

There was little choice when it came to Quirk users and their own lives. They could register and be protected, albeit trading their freedom for a life of "use" that would pay the bills and see them relatively "safe" in their work. Or they could try to go about their lives unregistered and likely get hunted down and conscripted into the government's Quirk program. It wouldn't do for normal society to have uncontrolled Quirk users running around in their midst. Most, however, developed in their youth and were given up to the government for their use. in turn, the family was provided for by the government and the Quirk-user's own supplemental pay. It lead to most parents making that trade, some to better their own lives, and others to better their children's lives rather than run the risk of their Quirk child trying to skulk under the radar.

The Todoroki family was one of the strongest and wealthiest. After all, Endeavor himself had a powerful Quirk and served as the No. 2 hero in the nation, made even more impressive by the Todoroki's general family affluence. So imagine the fanfare of Enji when his own first-born son developed a fire-based Quirk. Two Quirks in the same family, split apart by a single generation, was exceptionally rare. Endeavor had wasted no time in "trading" his child to the government, enrolling Touya in the same Quirk program he had been a part of. The towering building in the center of the city's sprawling Quirk complex was impossible to miss.

He didn't want to go. He didn't want to be torn from his mother's grip and dragged off by his father to go to a place that loomed frightening and cold in front of him. Didn't want his life to be chosen for him by someone he didn't know. But that's what he was supposed to do; Endeavor told him so. His father was the one to shut up his crying, his father was the one to tell him his Quirk was promising a brilliant future, his father was the one to hand him over to the scientists and leave him with the final words to "make me proud" as the doors shut behind him. On the one hand, terror of the unknown shackles. On the other, determination to make his father proud of him. A strange place with a bunch of kids he didn't know, ages ranging from 4 to 6. And a group of scientists who promised to help him reach the heights of his Quirk's power.

But first... a codename for Touya Todoroki: Dabi.

And the tests began.
